Festivals and Celebrations

Memmingen's calendar boasts a rich variety of festivities. The Fisherman's Day has a long tradition and together with the Children's Festival are high points of the summer season. Every year since 1572, the stream running through the town has been emptied of fish, following an ancient ritual. The fisherman, who weighs in with the heaviest trout, is crowned the fisher king for the year. He leads the royal parade to the civic centre, where dancing and singing carry on late into the night.

The people of Memmingen's love for their history shows itself most vividly during the Wallenstein-Summer Festival. When Memmingen is transformed into a medieval town by 3500 men, women and children dressed in period costume, with horses, carts, carriages and displays of military camp life.

At other more contemporary events, such as the Stadtfest, locals and visitors celebrate together. The Garden Festival held during 2000 created more recreational space for both citizens and out-of-town visitors to enjoy.
