Museums and Theatre

Memmingen's museums enable you to learn about the development and the history of the town, its culture and artists, its people and their lives through the centuries. The Hermansbau in late baroque style, houses the town museum, which covers the town's pre-historic period and its early history, the history of the Imperial town. The folk museum of Freudenthal is located here as well.

The paintings of the baroque artist Johann Heiß (1640 - 1704) and the regional painter Josef Madlener (1981 - 1967) can also be found here.

A museum dedicated to the Brethren of St. Antonius and the life and works of the Strigel family, a Swabian dynasty of artists, is located in the Antonierhaus. Discover works of art of a later period in the Parishaus, one of the most beautiful rococo mansions in Memmingen. The paintings of Max Unold, a representative of 'neo-realism', are on permanent display here.

The people of Memmingen have been going to the theatre for more than 500 years. In the year 1460, an Easter play was performed at the 'Wine Market'. The 'Mastersingers' have held performances since the 17th century.

As early as 1803, local theatre lovers founded their own company, the Swabian Landestheater of today.
